BOOMco Rapid Madness: this new blaster is one of those toys that you spend more time picking up the bits than you do actually firing the thing...
It is SO worth it though!
This new style battery free blaster from Mattel is incredibly satisfying to fire.
Review: BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster
Firstly I have to thank Mattel for being very nice and sending us this beastly Rapid Madness Blaster its been a great hit with my Son and his friends, especially as it's the Six Week Holidays!
I couldn't resist unpacking this fantastic BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster the moment the postman had left. As with most toys nowadays it was very well packed and took a while, but it was all recyclable which is a great thing.
The Rapid Madness Blaster is one of the bigger of the BOOMco blasters and it's certainly hefty. I quickly loaded up a rack of darts and popped the magazine in, which is really easy to do as you can only put it in one way.
To charge up the pressure you just grab the front handle and pull it in and out to raise the pressure.
Then I pulled the trigger.....
The power and speed of this Blaster is seriously fantastic. Almost instantly there were darts all over my office!
It wasn't long before our chief tester Charlie popped his heard round the door and claimed the BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster as his own.
You will have seen all of the Nerf reviews on my site so you know we have a few of their Blasters too. This new range from BOOMco is in direct competition with the hugely popular Nerf brand and I have to say this Blaster is the first one I have played with that definitely is going to cause a few feathers ruffled over at camp Nerf.
I have to say I'm glad to see a really viable alternative, it is a good thing and it causes innovation. As a consumer (or rather father of....) this means for more wicked toys to play with!
So apart from the main ace bonus of not having to buy batteries to make this Blaster work there are also a few other ace things that make the BOOMco range that little bit different.
BOOMco Sticky, but not Sticky Darts
The heads of each dart are made of a squiggly space age material that sticks to some things but not to others, it's probably just pure magic in solid form or something.
The main thing they are meant to stick to is one of the Smart Stick targets. You get one with the BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster and its like a huge sticker so you can stick it to whatever you want.
I found that they stick to photographs really well too, so I guess that opens up a whole load of things you could make targets out of, armed with a printer, some imagination and photo paper 😉
The same material that the darts stick to is also on the flappy shields you can see sticking out of the front of the Blaster. These can be folded in if you want and there is a handy button to flick them out when you need them.
The Darts come in loads of different colours so you and your mates can all have your favourite colour. This a great way to see who shot the winning shot and stave off arguments.
Each darts is really light, being made of thin plastic, they are fast to fly through the air and can be washed out to get all the gribble of them once you have finished playing.
Of course you are always going to need more darts, you always need more darts! But you do get enough to fill up the magazine and some spares too, which is great as I (we) have already lost some!
Pumping Up the Rapid Madness Blaster
It's really easy to prime the Rapid Madness Blaster just give it a few pumps and your away. Personally I had no problems doing this, but I have to say Charlie struggled a bit. I think he, as a six-year-old, might have managed the smaller Blasters better. He found a way to do it though, he just puts it on its end and pumps it like he is filling up a muskets barrel!
BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster Conclusion
In conclusion this Blaster is loads of fun to play with and very satisfying to fire. Its fast and shoots quite accurately. The addition of the sticky dart heads and the targets add to the gameplay that's possible.
The targets mean that even if all your mates have gone home you can still play with the Blaster on your own.
The fact that its pump-action is really satisfying and in the long run it makes it way cheaper (battery wise) than the battery hungry offering from Nerf.
So hats off to BOOMco a very worthy range of Blasters have just been unleashed into a toyshop near you.
You can always get yours online though, here are the current best prices in the UK for the BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster.
